January
We have now been serving as the Relief Society Presidency for 2 months and we
still feel like we are drowning, but at times we come up for a breath now and again!
Planned and scheduled an upcoming Relief Society Getting to Know You activity for
February 3, 2022. Jordan North 8 th and 1 st Wards combined in November of 2018,
COVID had us separated from each other for the most part of 2020 and well into
2021. With these 2 events we felt as though we were back at square one again –
beginning a new ward family with people we hadn’t had a chance to get to know
very well. Each Sunday we tried to learn the names and faces of so many people.
We felt like a Getting to Know You activity would be a great way to introduce or
reintroduce ourselves and learn some things about those who we are unfamiliar
with in our own ward.
Ministering interviews were held on Sundays, January 16 th & 30 th immediately
following our 2-hour church services, from 1:30-4:00 p.m. Many sisters came and
we received much needed information as to the needs of the sisters in our ward.
We are appreciative of all those who serve as a ministering sister, as we all are the
Lords hands in this work of caring, serving and loving one another. Hot Chocolate
and cashew white chocolate popcorn was served as a yummy refreshment for the
sisters who attended.
February
We spent several Presidency meetings reviewing, pondering, and praying over our
ministering districts and sisters. We changed some ministering assignments and
Companionships.
The Relief Society Presidency attended a Self -Reliance training by Jordan North
Stake leaders.
Saturday, February 22 was a full day providing service to a Sister in our ward whose
husband recently passed away due to COVID. This sister needed moving of all her
belongings from 3 storage sheds because the owner had sold them to have
apartments built on the property. The move was made from 3 storage sheds in
South Salt Lake to 2 storage sheds in West Valley which are much closer to her
home and have easier access to them.
We decided to postpone The Getting to Know You activity we had planned for this
month due to the extremely high number of COVID cases (a new strain Omicron).
Our Ward was invited to attend the Stake Women’s conference either in person or
viewing it by ZOOM.
Jetta Simms made 3 adorable baby blankets for new babies in our Ward.
New classes have been made available for Family History and Gospel Essentials.
These classes will be held during Sunday School hour during church.
March
Stake temple day on Thursday, March 10 th in conjunction with Stake Conference
that was held Saturday, March 12 th and Sunday, March 13 th . Our current Stake
Presidency was released, and a new Stake Presidency was called.
Erich Fleischel President
Joshua Tidwell 1 st Counselor
Scott Harmon 2 nd Counselor
A baby girl was born to Heather and Bradley Burkhart on March 12 th . A baby boy
was born to Jenny and Taylor Roemmich on March 15 th . Both babies and mothers
are doing great. It’s always exciting to have new little ones!
A long-time ward member Elizabeth Lake passed away on March 14 th . She had been
living in a care center for the last several years. A luncheon was provided by the
Relief Society for the family in the church building cultural hall following the
graveside service.
April
A ward Family History Cultural night was held on Saturday, the 23 rd . Some sisters
from Relief Society shared about their own family history. This was held at the
church building in the cultural hall.
A Temple activity for Jordan North 1 st Ward and the Lighthouse Ward (a Spanish
Ward) Relief Societies was held on Thursday, April 28 th . This activity was created due
to the Taylorsville temple being built. The construction workers who are currently
working on the Taylorsville temple receive cookies every Wednesday from local
organizations donating cookies for the workers. Many of the workers are Hispanic
and do not speak much English. Therefore, we invited the Lighthouse Ward to join
us. There were 160 workers, and each worker gets 2 cookies that is a lot of cookies!
We bagged the cookies and attached “Cinco De Mayo” notes and notes of gratitude
for the work they are doing to make it possible for a House of the Lord to be built
so close in proximity to our location.
May
The date for Taylorsville temple worker cookie delivery was May 4 th, the day before
Cinco de Mayo – 5 th of May celebration. When we delivered the cookies, we were
told that some of the workers liked to keep the notes written for them with them in
their wallets or pockets as they worked. We look forward to serving and doing work
for those who have passed to the other side of the veil without receiving the
blessings of the temple while on earth. Many friendships were made with the
sisters of the Lighthouse Ward. It is fun to see them on Sundays after their church
services and before ours begins in the halls and say “hola” (hi) and always a big hug
Follows!
On May 12 th, we went with our Stake counterpart to visit ward members prior to
ward Conference that was held on Sunday, May 15 th .
June
We honored the men of our Ward for Father’s Day by making treat bags. In each
bag was a box of Cracker Jacks, a Hershey chocolate candy bar, and some beef
jerky. The gift bag itself was a white paper lunch sack with the top cut to make a
button-down white shirt collar. We added a tie made from paper and attached it to
the white-collar bag and it became a “dress shirt bag”. Happy Father’s Day to all
the men! We thank you and love you so much!
July
As a presidency we feel it is of great importance to visit sisters in our ward. We have
been having a Relief Society Presidency meeting the Tuesday before our 2 nd and 4 th
Sunday Relief Society lessons. The other Tuesdays we have slated for visits to
sisters. We have been going in 2 groups of 2 and get at least one or two visits per
group. It has been a joy to visit sisters in their homes, to feel of their spirits, and we
leave with an uplifted happy heart ourselves.
August
It has been an extremely busy month!
Zelda Black, another longtime member of our ward passed away. Most recently she
was living in a care center facility. The funeral was held at the church building on
Wednesday, August 17 th and a luncheon was provided for the family after they
returned from the cemetery services.
Ministering interviews were held immediately following church on two Sundays,
August 14 th and August 21 st from 1:30 -4:00 p.m. It was a joy to visit with many of
our ministering sisters. Since it is Summer and so hot, for refreshment we had
lemonade to drink and strawberry lemonade cookies.
For all the sisters who have school age children – School started Thursday, August
18 th . Getting children ready to head back to school can be quite a task! Some sisters
are sad to have their kids go back to school, but for the most part many Moms are
Smiling!
A ward/community summertime BBQ was on Saturday, August 20 th . Relief Society
sisters were asked to bring salads and desserts. Many from the community came as
well as many ward members. The menu was barbequed hamburgers with all the
toppings, chips, salads, ice cold water, and delicious desserts. It was a cooler
summer evening which was very enjoyable. For the youth and children there were
games, bubbles, balls, and a fun 9-square in the air game. It was a fun summer
Night!
As a community a neighborhood block party “A Night Out Against Crime” was held
at Country Meadows Park (a small park right here in our neighborhood). As
members of the community and as members of the Church of Jesus Christ we were
highly involved with this evening event.
Stake temple day was Thursday, August 25 th . Members were asked to attend the
temple any time during that day to prepare spiritually for Stake Conference. Stake
Conference followed with a Leadership session at 4:00 p.m. and an adult session at
7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 27 th. A general session was on Sunday, August 28 th .
Dorthy Smith a very well known and very longtime member of our ward passed
away at the age of 90. Her funeral was held Tuesday, August 30 th in the church
building chapel with a family luncheon, provided by the relief Society sisters
immediately following the services. The family was then traveling to Scipio, Utah for
her burial.
Say it again…. It has been an extremely BUSY month!!
September
Relief Society Soup and Salad Sampler activity. The purpose of this activity was to
gather sisters together to enjoy good food, share recipes, and to simply visit with
one another. 8 different soups, 10 different salads, delicious bread and cookies
were brought to sample and enjoy.
October
September was a moment to catch our breath before we were back again facing 2
more back to back funerals.
Brett Thompson – the former Bishop, before Bishop Degen, who is our current
Bishop, passed away so unexpectantly at age 58, on October 7, 2022. He and his
wife moved to New Jersey a year ago. Since they spent over 30 years in West Valley
City, Utah and raised their children here, along with other family members still in
Utah they wanted to have a memorial service in Utah. We provided a luncheon for
them to enjoy and visit with so many that they have not seen in a years’ time.
Jordan North 1 st ward will be forever grateful for the service and example given by
Bishop Brett Thompson.
Meredith Blake passed away on October 11, 2022. What a wonderful lady who
raised her family in Jordan North 4 th Ward, another ward in our stake, then in her
aging years she moved in with one of her daughters who lives in our ward. It was
nice to have the 2 wards come together to help with the funeral luncheon that was
given for the family after the funeral services.
October 29 th was the Ward/community Fall Harvest Festival. This was held at the
church building cultural hall. There was potluck dinner of soups, salads, breads, and
delicious desserts. Carnival type games were available to be played. The time was
well spent visiting with Ward friends and neighbors.
November
A ward member Natalie Dee Hansen passed away suddenly on November 5 th . Her
family chose to have a private memorial.
During this month of Thanksgiving, we have once again been reminded that there is
so much to be Thankful for.
December
Relief Society was responsible for arranging food sign-ups and table decorations for
our Ward Christmas dinner that was held the evening of Saturday, December 3 rd . It
is always a delight to get together with our ward family and celebrate the birth of
our Savior, Jesus Christ.
With combined efforts with the Elders Quorum, we assembled and delivered 19
Christmas bags to some ward members who are Widowed, Single, Elderly, and
homebound, or to families that really are in need this Christmas season. Each bag
included a loaf of 100% whole wheat bread, hot cocoa mix packets, mini
marshmallows, can of mixed nuts, microwave popcorn, ja of jam, box of instant
oatmeal, oranges and apples, cookies from the young Women, Christmas cards
colored by the Primary children. Members of the Elder’s Quorum delivered these
bags to the recipients.
As a Relief Society presidency, we wanted to join in the Church’s initiative to “Light
the World” this Christmas season. We purchased a fun Christmas light up necklace
for each sister, who attended Relief Society on Sunday December 11 th , with a quote
from Elder Neal A. Maxwell saying, “small lights have a way of being seen in a dark
world” to take home and enjoy during the season.
It has been a wonderful year full of love and service. As we continue in our callings,
we are doing the work of Jesus Christ, whose church we are privileged to be
members of. We look forward with happy and willing heart to a new year full of
opportunity, learning, love, faith and growth.
